Annie's Fund, dedicated in fond memory of Annie

Abandoned as a crippled pup on the side of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Annie would have died if not for being spotted by a rescuer who turned her into the local shelter. Originally, the shelter thought she had been crippled by a car accident, but LIGRR volunteers were able to determine that she was actually crippled by severe Hip Dysplasia, a common condition in Goldens. LIGRR raised the funds for her surgery and a volunteer agreed to "foster" Annie until she was rehabilitated and able to be re-homed. That volunteer was current LIGRR President, Melanie, and her dog Annie came to represent the LIGRR mission: "It is our mission to provide veterinary care and loving adoptive homes for any Golden in need - no matter whether the dog is a young puppy or a senior citizen."

Annie's surgery, a Triple Pelvic Osteotomy, or TPO, is one of three common, and costly surgeries for Hip Dysplasia. Golden Retrievers are frequently crippled by this condition which causes rapid deterioration of the hip joint in extreme cases or, more commonly, arthritis in later life.

Annie succumbed to cancer in March of 2009 but, due to LIGRR’s generosity, she lived a full, happy and comfortable life, attaining a CD title in Obedience as well as becoming a Canine Good Citizen and a Therapy dog. In loving memory of Annie, LIGRR has established the Annie Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide for costly hip surgeries to allow otherwise healthy Goldens to live long, pain-free lives. Please help make this fund successful with donations in memory of Annie. As usual, any donations made to LIGRR are tax deductable.
